Senovėje, kaip ir dabar, žmonės ieškojo,
kaip įprasminti savo būtį. Savęs įgyvendinimas
vykdavo per nudirbtus darbus. Todėl
nenuostabu, kad kasdieninėms veikloms
lietuvių liaudies dainose skiriama nemažai
dėmesio. Senovės lietuvio gyvenimas buvo
tiesiogiai priklausomas nuo gamtos ir jos
sąlygų. Dainose lietuvis dažnai šnekasi su
gamta tiesiogiai, susitapatindamas.
Sutartinės yra viena archajiškiausių
muzikos atlikimo formų. Dažnai buvo naudojamos
apeigoms, ritualams. Sutartinių sakrališkumą
liudija jų muzikinė struktūra bei
dainuojant atliekama choreografija. Meditatyvi,
monotoniška, apeiginė atmosfera pabrėžia
gamtos ir žmogaus tarpusavio ryšį. Dažni
motyvų pasikartojimai yra tarsi užkalbėjimų
formulė. Tai būdas maldoje išsakyti troškimus
ar norus bei juos išjausti. Gamta buvo
sudvasinta ir apgyvendinta mitinėmis dievybėmis,
kurios sukurdavo saugumo jausmą. Ji
iškeliama virš žmogaus kaip daug išmintingesnė
esybė. Toks ypatingas dėmesys gamtai
išreiškia fundamentalų dėsnį: ką duodame –
tą gauname. Žmogui yra svarbu gerbti gamtą,
rodyti jai nuolankumą, šilumą bei padėką.

In the old times – just like today – people
used to look for ways to make their existence
meaningful. Much of their self-realisation
manifested within their work, so it is no
wonder that a great deal of attention in folk
songs is focused on people’s daily chores and
their processes. Ancient Lithuanians were
strongly dependent on nature and its conditions,
therefore they often talk to the nature
directly in songs thus identifying with it.
Sutartinės – Lithuanian polyphonic songs
– is one of the most archaic forms of music.
They were often used in rituals. The sacredness
of these songs is illustrated by their
musical structure and choreography. Their
meditative, monotonous, and ritualistic ambience
amplifies the relationship between
nature and human. Frequent repetitions that
sound like incantations, are used as a way
to tell and feel one’s wishes and desires in a
text. Nature was spiritualised and inhabited
by mythical deities thus creating a sense of
safety. It was elevated above human beings
as a much wiser entity. This special attention
to the nature translates into a fundamental
law: you receive what you give. It is important
for people to respect the nature and
show their humility, warmth and gratitude.
