about
Bene kiekvienam žmogui išgirdus žodį
„leliumoj“ kyla klausimas – o ką jis reiškia?
Vieno paprasto atsakymo į šį klausimą nėra.
Lietuvių kalendorinėse apeiginėse dainose
sutinkami žodeliai, tokie kaip „leliumoj“,
„leliumai“, „aleliumai“, „aladumai ladum“,
„lėliu kalėda“ yra vadinami refrenais, o jų
reikšmė yra tik numanoma.
Pagal vieną iš pagrindinių etnografų
keliamų teorijų, šie žodžiai naudoti pagerbti
didžiąsias motinas deives – Ladą ir Lelą.
Lada baltų mitologijoje apibūdinama kaip
tarpininkė tarp dangaus ir žemės, lietaus
davėja, žemės globėja. Lela – gimimo, vaisingumo,
santuokų deivė, globėja. Apeigos

Nearly anyone hearing the word ‘leliumoj’
can’t help but wonder about its
meaning and there’s no simple explanation.
Words like ‘leliumoj’, ‘leliumai’, ‘aleliumai’,
‘aladumai ladum’, ‘lėliu kalėda’,
encountered in Lithuanian calendar ritual
songs, are referred to as refrains and their
meaning is very obscure.
According to one of the major theories,
these words were used to worship Lada and
Lela – the great mother goddesses. Baltic
mythology defines Lada as the intermediary
between heavens and Earth, the giver
of rain and patroness of soil. Meanwhile,
Lela is the goddess and patroness of birth,
fertility, and marriage. Rituals, dedicated
to these goddesses, used to be held during
advent period, when young lads and girls
used to get together to find their future
match. This is one of the explanations why
songs, incorporating the roots of the goddesses’
names, attributed to love, family,
and marriage, are so common to the advent
and courting period.
Meanwhile, another theory is rather
straightforward: since these refrains were
used in songs, mostly sung in the advent
time, which revolves around the return of
the sun, light, and life, a natural conclusion
is drawn that its meaning is namely the
advent itself – the period until winter solstice.
